JJ: From size 18 to size 8, smaller and healthier than when I graduated high school

August of 2014 I laid down to zip up my pants, the largest size I had ever worn other than maternity clothes, and could barely zip them up. I knew with winter coming, I always put on a few extra pounds and I could not bear having to buy more clothes. I have never been a skinny person but two kids later and my bad habits wreaked havoc on my body. I had so many clothes already that ranged over 4 sizes that I refused to go to the next size, 20’s!!!

Never had I stepped in a gym before and JRC had just opened ours about 3 months prior. It was so busy being new to the site and I didn’t want it to be a flavor of the month thing. That day I started using the My Fitness Pal app on my phone and just tracked what I was eating on a daily basis for 2 weeks. On a good day my average intake was 4000 calories and never thought twice about it. I always tried to cut back drastically or run an hour a day and wondered why I would fail and never be able to keep it up. I started mid-August by cutting back to 2000 Calories a day and walked by the gym daily on my way to the Café and thought I should be going in here instead of getting food.

I believe I joined in October and by that time was down about 18lbs just from cutting back to 2000 calories a day and no exercise added yet. Desk jobs make it hard to fit in any exercise. October 2014, I started walking 15 minutes twice a day on my breaks. Megan was my designated trainer and I stuck to weights twice a week from once I joined. I talked to no one about it for fear of failing or putting it all back on. I was only 3 months in and about 20lbs down and knew that any day, I could go right back to 4000+ calories and never think twice about it. I wasn’t miserable either way but the next size down did feel pretty awesome.

I made it through the holidays and winter with only gaining about 4lbs back and come February 2015 gave it 120% again. With walking on my two 15 minute breaks daily, I also added 20 minutes at lunch time. I dropped from 2000 calories a day to 1800 and continued to drop 200 calories every few months. Continued PT twice weekly and walking daily for a minimum of 30 minutes a day and up to an hour if I could make it happen. I never had a full hour a day to devote to it so my hour had to be broken up in 15 minutes increments or less. Walked during conference calls, ate lunch at my desk and walked 20 minutes at lunch, and instead of getting a snack at break time I would walk another mile.

Megan has always had something new for me to do in our PT sessions. I don’t know where she comes up with this stuff. She has been a big part of my success and I could not do what I have done without her help also. Fast forward to today and here is 2014 measurements compared to today (18 months later).

Lying down to zip up size 18’s, to now size 8’s in the last 18 months has taken consistency. Life is good and I am so thankful to have a place at work that focuses on healthier living and gave me the opportunity to meet Megan and motivation to keep going and be smaller than I ever remember. I was a size 10 when I graduated from high school 20 years ago………..Pretty excited about being smaller than that now.
